Obituary for Ralph Havener
Ralph S. Havener, Jr, 98, a WWII veteran, part of The Greatest Generation, died peacefully at home, on June 2, 2024, in Boone County with his wife, Mickey, at his bedside.
Ralph was a dedicated husband and father and an amazing storyteller. He was a committed pastor’s spouse, teaching Sunday School at Olivet Christian Church, ringing church bells, sweeping floors, and mowing church yards.
Obituary for Ralph Havener
Ralph was born on Halloween, October 31, 1925, to Ralph Samuel and Leona Ida Anderson Havener in Moline, IL. His early childhood was marked with sadness. His parents divorced when he was five years old, in an era when children of divorce were ridiculed and mistreated. Ralph often spoke of spending his first four years of school in the principal’s office. He, his mother and his baby brother, Bobby, moved from Evanston, IL back to Moline to be close to his grandparents. Within 2 years, Bobby ran between two cars into the street and was hit and killed. It was a loss Ralph carried with him to his death. In January 1944, he graduated from Moline High School, where he played center on the football team and participated in the Army Air Corps Cadets program.
Ralph enlisted in the Army Air Corps at Fort Sheridan, IL, with three of his high school buddies the week they graduated. Within a week, he was on a train to an unknown destination, which turned out to be a makeshift boot camp in a hotel on Miami Beach, FL. He fell in love with the beaches and ocean air.
After basic training, Ralph trained to be a blister gunner on a B-29, the Flying Fortress. He was privileged to fly around the world with the 20th Air Force Hell Birds. He landed to refuel on every continent but Antarctica. He served in India, Burma, China and ultimately, on the island of Tinian in the Northern Mariannas. He received several medals, including the Oak Leaf Cluster for disabling a Japanese battleship. Twenty missions over Japan; and twenty-four months later, Ralph’s combat points allowed him to be discharged in time for Christmas, 1945.
After the war, with the passage of the GI Bill, Ralph returned to the University of Miami with his childhood friend, Larry Petit. Ralph and Larry ran a lawn business while in Miami. After graduation, he moved to Madison Wisconsin to work on graduate degrees in history, specifically American Civil War History, at the University of Wisconsin. While there, he worked in the UW-M and Wisconsin state Archives and received specialized training in archives and records management at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
He taught history at Illinois Western University and Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. He worked as an archivist for the state of Illinois; he completed his career as the first Director of Archives for the University of Mo system (1969-1990). After retiring, Ralph substituted in Callaway County, Hallsville and Columbia Public Schools where he was very popular with elementary students for stories of his pet alligator, Pete, his greatest childhood joy. Long after he stopped teaching children, his former students would bring their mothers to meet him when they would see him at the mall or grocery store.
He was married in 1955, to his high school sweetheart, Virginia L. Nordstrom, in Moline, Il. They had three daughters, Adele, Julie and Valerie; and were married for 17 years before her untimely death. He later married Michael (Mickey) Dickerson Davis at Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Ralph was baptized as an infant and completed confirmation classes before joining Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline. He considered his mother the most influential person in his life because she took him to church, introduced him to the faith and encouraged him to complete 2 years of confirmation classes at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Moline. At the time of his death, Ralph was a member of Broadway Christian Church and an associate member of Missouri United Methodist Church in Columbia.
Other influential persons in Ralph’s life were historian William Hesseltine, his major professor at UW-M; Jess Bell, Wisconsin state archivist; and LaMont Hultgren, his football coach at John Deere Jr High School.
Ralph was a dedicated husband and father and an amazing storyteller. He was a committed pastor’s spouse, teaching Sunday School at Olivet Christian Church, ringing church bells, sweeping floors, and mowing church yards. He went on several mission trips with church youth groups. He was passionate about family, babies, reading, swimming, American Civil War history, bow ties, Miami, pecan pie and ice cream. He slept with a picture of U.S Grant over his bed.
The experiences that he felt most influenced him were his military service (Jan 1944-Dec 1945); his graduate school years; and the several illnesses and challenges of his loved ones, especially, the deaths of Bobby, Virginia and Valerie.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Rev. Mickey Havener; his daughters, Adele Havener Nickolaus (David), Julie Havener Deters (Robin); son-in-law, Derek Kewley; his stepchildren, Michelle Davis Hinshaw (Paul), James R. Davis, II, (Rev. Laura Hudson) of Monroe, GA; and eleven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Willard Klingberg; his first wife, Virginia Havener; infant daughter, Sonja; baby brother, Robert Frank Havener; youngest daughter, Valerie L. Havener Hess Kewley; and his schoolmates and lifelong friends, Larry Petit, Joseph Mortier and Don Peterson.

Obituary for Clinton Peck Hayne
Clinton Peck Hayne died peacefully in his sleep on June 12, 2024, just shy of his 90th birthday.
He was a fisher of men: through Kairos, he was a devoted minister, listener, and friend to many a lifer at Angola.
Obituary for Clinton Peck Hayne
A lifelong Who Dat, he’d proclaim every summer the Saints are going to the Superbowl this year, I know it. Well, at least that Leo got that right once. Peck attended Audubon Elementary, Country Day, The Hill School and Yale. At Yale he was in the Navy ROTC, a golden gloves boxer, and a diver on its #1 ranked swim team. Following in the footsteps of his father, Peck served our Nation as a Navy pilot for 4 years in Oahu and Okinawa and another 4 as a Navy reserve pilot in Belle Chasse. While stationed in Hawaii, he met the love of his life, Pam Manhart, whom he married in short order.
After the Navy, he returned to New Orleans, where he was a stockbroker for 44 years. He first joined E.F. Hutton and then was a founding member of Viguerie Hayne & Chaffe which later merged with Howard Weil and then with Legg Mason. Anyone who knew Peck knew he had a kind heart and always wanted to help. He lived by his family motto Tenax Propositi-firmness of purpose, stubbornness some might say. Whether heli-skiing in Canada, flyfishing for tarpon in the Florida Keys, bird hunting in Louisiana and Mississippi, boxing in his 50s, prison ministry at Angola, or anything else, Peck was all-in. Some say Peck was the first person to regularly jog down St. Charles Avenue-in the 1960s. Before he became an avid redfish guide for 20 years in the Louisiana bayous, he could be found practicing his double-haul fly-casting on the Audubon Park golf course. His boat, the Bank Robber, was where he connected with nature and the people he fished with-and sometimes the mud flats in south Plaquemines Parish.
But he was also a fisher of men: through Kairos, he was a devoted minister, listener, and friend to many a lifer at Angola. Peck is survived by his wife, Pam Manhart Hayne, son and daughter-in-law C. Peck Hayne Jr. and Vivienne Monachino Hayne, son and daughter-in-law Thomas Ashton Hayne (Tommy) and Carolyn Chojnowski Hayne, and daughter Heidi Doyle Hayne. Peck has four grandchildren, Heidi Hayne, Anna Hayne, Lily Schrimsher, and Jonathan (Jack) Schrimsher. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Brevard Hayne Jr. and Helen Peck Hayne, and his younger brother, Frank Brevard Hayne III.

He is survived by daughters Mary, Julie, Amy (David), Jenny, and son Tom, his brother Ron McMillin, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren Amy Rose and Alex Pearson, Jody Jerolaman, Brett, Savannah, Cameron, Bailey, and Merritt McMillin, Moriah, Nicholas, and Alexander Noegel, and Carsyn Kueber.
Marv was born in rural New Palestine, Indiana to Fern and Royal McMillin June 8, 1932. As a young boy he developed a life-long passion for sports. In 1950 he graduated from Marshall High School with a class numbering just 17 students. Marv then attended Indiana State University while working as Director of the Boys’ Club, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education in 1954. It was there he would meet and marry his college sweetheart Nancy Ann Notley, forging a union that would span seven decades, five children, and over 100 pets.
But first Marv had to answer the call of the United States Army. He was accompanied by his bride for a two-year adventure in Germany, which was fondly recalled as an exciting time for the young couple. Upon his return to the States, Marv taught for five years in the Indiana public school system while coaching sports, mentoring and encouraging countless young people with his trademark emphasis on inclusion and fair play.
Having realized his calling in leadership, Marv completed his Doctorate degree in Education at the University Florida in 1965. He returned to Indiana as Director of Counseling at the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology for three years, followed by two years as the Director of the Counseling Center at Indiana State University. Returning to the University of Florida in 1970, Marv began a 24 year-long tenure as Associate Dean in the College of Education. He was especially proud to have been a founding member of the revolutionary “Pro-Teach” teacher preparation program, with his own child as a member of the first graduating class.
Marv was exceedingly generous with his gifts of time and kindness. For several years Marv spent his lunchbreak daily as a visitor for Meals on Wheels, eventually inviting the elderly man to spend his last days in the McMillin household. Marv continued his affinity for sports by coaching youth baseball and basketball teams alongside his son Tom and is also credited with leading the nationally ranked Renegades Wheelchair basketball team. Marv participated in the Kairos Prison Ministry and Hospice, underscoring his mission to share his faith with people in all walks of life.
Together with his wife Nancy, Marv was an active and steadfast member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Fishermen Sunday School class for over four decades, leading both youth and adult classes. Following his retirement from the University Marv joined the church staff as a Lay Minister for Visitation, extending God’s love and peace to those most in need. He visited hospitals and nursing homes, led countless counseling sessions, and officiated at more than 100 memorial services, including 63 for members of the Fishermen class and their families.
Marv’s life’s work stands as a testament to one of his favorite scriptures, Micah 6:8:
“He has told you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you. But to do justice, to love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.”
We will treasure Marv’s memory as a loving husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, minister, and faithful friend. He was truly a beacon of light that reflected God’s love and brightened the world around him on his journey.

Because he had no siblings he unofficially adopted Carolyn’s two sisters; Suzanne (Ed) St. John and Kathy (Ray) Kenahan and all the nieces and nephews that came with them.
Bob’s happiest days where when he was in law enforcement. He started as a patrolman in the Ocala Police Department, then served as a deputy and finally an undercover investigator in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (Florida).
In 1988 Bob and Carolyn moved to Boone, never looking back. Recent days would find him in his woodworking shop where he made mirrors and crosses from local reclaimed barnwood. Along the way he was able to indulge his love of things loud and fast by owning a racing boat and more than one Harley motorcycle. He rode with the Christian Motorcyclists Association where annually they joined the Ride to the Wall in Washington, DC to honor missing U.S. servicemen in Vietnam. CMA would also ride into local churches for Thunder Sunday to “take over” the service and be treated to potluck lunches afterward.
Also, favorites were riding into prisons or to children’s homes to share their testimonies. Being creative, Bob had managed to find a way to combine his love for Christ with his love for things loud and fast.
Other ministries that were dear to his heart was the Walk to Emmaus and also Kairos Prison Ministry where he served both on numerous teams.
Several illnesses tried to slow him down but they nearly always met their match. Special sincere thanks to his PCP Tim Dailey, MD and his staff who used their expertise and humor to add untold years to Bob’s life. Bob always thought he’d only make it to 50 but he evidently underestimated Carolyn’s love and his many physicians.

Obituary for Nancy Daggett
Nancy Saunders Daggett passed away peacefully at the age of 87 in the comfort of home and the company of family on March 20, 2024.
Having been involved with Kairos Prison Ministry in WNY, Nancy personally witnessed the transformative power of Christ in changing the lives of the long-term incarcerated. For 10 years, she and Clint worked doggedly in their new home state to win the approval for the launch of Kairos of Maine. They went on to lead many of the over 40 Kairos Weekends held inside Maine State Prison to date.
Obituary for Nancy Daggett
Growing up in Swarthmore, PA, the second of four siblings, it was at her grandparent’s beloved ‘camp’ on Crescent Lake in Raymond, Maine where under the tall pines she took her first steps. A blue-eyed blonde, self-professed tomboy, Nancy grew to love horses and softball. Following the family’s move to western New York in 1953, the newly transplanted high school junior caught the eye of her future husband, Clint Daggett. They soon became inseparable.
Married weeks after Nancy’s 1958 graduation from the University of Michigan, their first home was a tiny trailer on the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base while Clint finished up his military service. Returning to Niagara Falls, NY, they welcomed three children, Esther, Clint Jr. and Lorrie, adding a series of dogs, cats, gerbils and a short-lived canary along the way. Whether hosting delicious holiday gatherings at home or helping corral the growing next generation of young Saunders cousins each summer at Crescent Lake, Nancy’s extended family loved her deeply for her warm, caring, nurturing spirit.
Spiritual life centered around First Presbyterian Church, where Nancy taught Sunday school to kids and grownups alike. They repurposed an old school bus, and with Clint at the wheel, offered transportation to First Pres services, sharing Christian fellowship with families in the poorest parts of the city. Volunteering with the Service League of Niagara Falls Hospital provided additional opportunities for outreach. Nancy‘s faith deepened during a Catholic Cursillo weekend, having felt God’s love personally for the first time. Together they were instrumental in promoting its Protestant equivalent, Koinonia, throughout the Buffalo region in the years to follow.
After countless Sunday drives out ‘into the country’, the Daggetts moved in 1977 to a 40-acre family farm in Wilson, NY. Nancy boarded horses, Clint drove tractors and the kids weeded vegetables – begrudgingly. Countless dried flowers from Morning Star Farm made it to market. Commuting together back to the city to work side by side at Beir’s Department Store, they were their own best support network. Greatly admired, Nancy always showed great care and conscientiousness juggling home, church and work.
In 1987, an opportunity arose to move closer to family, now grown and settling in New England. They continued to work as a team, launching the Daggett Insurance Agency, serving southernmost Maine. Nancy, ever supportive and organized, managed the myriad details of the growing business until their joint retirement in 2000.
They went on to lead many of the over 40 retreat weekends held inside Maine State Prison to date.
Nancy was devoted to her seven grandchildren, attending as many events as possible, so fortunate that all lived locally. Clint and Nancy greatly enjoyed traveling the US and Canada, often with their camping trailer and fishing boat in tow, from the Florida Keys to Alaska. They often hosted grandchildren along the way.
Nancy lived with dementia for the past decade, but never lost her beautiful smile. Clint’s role in her care, ever watchful, patient and kind, cannot be overstated. He views it as the greatest privilege of his life. Over time, family caregiving was augmented by Danielle and her Aging Kingdom Agency staff, as well as Hospice of Southern Maine. Because of their tender care, for which the family is so grateful, Nancy was able to remain at home, with the love of her life, until her passing.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years Clint Daggett Sr; son Clint Daggett Jr (Cath); daughter Lorrie Vedral; and son-in-law Mark Reynolds.
Also, grandchildren Julia, Emily and John Vedral; Lily and Susannah (Kayla Blackborow) Daggett; and Erin and Kelly Reynolds. Also, siblings Lorraine (Mike) McCormick of California; Dick (Jeanne) Saunders of Denver; and sister-in-law Brenda Saunders of Virginia.
Nancy was predeceased by daughter Esther Reynolds, son-in-law John Vedral and brother Don Saunders.

Obituary for Michael Still
Michael Ronald Still, June 19, 1949 – Nov. 14, 2023, Isaiah 64:8, Yet, You Lord, are our Father. We are the clay. You are the Potter. We are all the work of Your Hand.
When Mike married Di, also a true believer in being the hands of Christ, together they served the Lord through numerous public ministries: The walk to Emmaus, Kairos Prison Ministry and the Christian Motorcyclists Association.
Obituary for Michael Still
Mike was born in Phoenix, Arizona – the late-in-life son of Fredrick R. Still and Margaret Haugh Still, both deceased. His brother, Freddie Still (Bev), was 17 years older and is deceased. Freddie and Bev were instrumental in involving Mike in Boy Scouts and in the Church of God-guiding him on his life-long path of service.
Mike graduated from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1967 and then came to Indiana to attend Anderson College (now University), a Church of God, Christ-centered college, to achieve a Bachelor’s degree of Arts and Crafts in 1975 where he loved being a part of the Drama Club and the Booster Club. While attending Anderson he was part of a mission trip to Peru, South America. He then achieved a Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University in 1982. Mike accepted a position as the art teacher at Maconaquah School Corporation in 1977 and remained there for 31 years, retiring in 2008.
Mike was married to Gail Winget in 1973 whom he met at Anderson College, and they were blessed with three children, all who survive: Christian Still (Natalie); Adam Still (Stormie); Aaron Still (Amber). In 1998, Mike married Diana Proctor Snelling Still, alias “Princess Di” and he became her “Prince Charming (PC)”. Diana survives her Prince Charming. Diana’s son, Michael Snelling (Miranda) became a fourth son to Mike.
Mike truly believed that he was to be the hands of the Master Potter, the Almighty God, by using his talents and his mind to spread the “Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ” so he embarked on the ministry of the Master’s Potter to show and tell others about Christ while making his beautiful, functional pottery on his potter’s wheel. He believed that we, as God’s children, are like clay in the hands of God, the Master Potter, being shaped and molded in His image.
When Mike married Di, also a true believer in being the hands of Christ, together they served the Lord through numerous public ministries: The walk to Emmaus, Kairos Prison Ministry and the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Together they enjoyed displaying and selling his pottery at craft shows and historical re-enactments such as Mississinewa 1812 and Trail of Courage, always focusing on God as the Master Potter.
Mike enjoyed radio-controlled airplanes, riding motorcycles, riding his bike on Rails to Trails with friends, attending Tuesday morning Men’s Prayer Breakfasts, and serving South Creek Church of God. A couple of Mike’s “Prince Charming” attributes were that he always had a joke to tell, and that he was always ready to help anyone in need. Music of all genres was one of his passions and he was able to express that when singing in choirs. Mike was a “movie buff” and you did not want to play movie trivia with him!
Mike and Di made it a priority to interact with family and friends – with special attention to their grandchildren who survive: Hailey Still, Madelyn Still, Peyton Still, Rylee Still, Kyla Still Takata (David), Mia Still Crawford (Luke), Camdyn Still, Samara Still, Aurora Still, Cade Still and Cole Still; Bailey Snelling and Drew Snelling. Also surviving are a niece and nephew in Arizona and a niece in Georgia. He was preceded in death by his nephews, Wes Still and William Still.

Arthur “Art” John Paquette Jr., of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on January 4, 2024, at the age of 76.
His greatest loves were his family, country gospel music, Kairos Prison Ministry, Cursillo, Mother Theresa, and the Spirit Builders Group that he started at church. He loved his church and his church family.
Obituary for Art Paquette, Jr.
Art was a proud airman of the United States Air Force from 1967-1973. He was an Aircraft Mechanic on C130’s and would point them out from time to time when they flew over the house.

Art was a really soft-hearted guy that would get choked up at movies and music that touched his heart. One day he found a short story titled “A Man is Measured by the Size of His Tears.” He handed out copies over and over to let men (and women) know that tears are good! His greatest loves were his family, country gospel music, Kairos Prison Ministry, Cursillo, Mother Theresa, and the Spirit Builders Group that he started at church. He loved his church and his church family.
While growing up, he played in bars and on the New Jersey Boardwalk, but in 1998, God saved him from a near fatal car accident and then Art dedicated his whole life to the Lord.
Music kept him going, even through Stage 4 throat cancer and lung cancer. He loved the song, “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” In Art’s words, “I never feared dying, I knew God gave me 26 more years than I should have had. I just hope I can make a difference in someone’s life.” Art was an ordinary humble man that lived an extraordinary life. Well done, Good and Faithful Servant.

Obituary for Douglas Baker
Douglas M. Baker, age 75, of Amarillo, entered the gates of Heaven on September 28, 2023.
Douglas served the Lord faithfully as well; he sponsored many men on The Walk to Emmaus, and volunteered his time with the Kairos Prison Ministry and Bridges to Life. Douglas was instrumental in starting the Kairos Torch program for the High Plains Youth Center. One of his greatest passions was” to bring the lost sheep back into the fold.”
Obituary for Douglas Baker
Douglas was born on April 17, 1948, in South Portland, Maine, to his parents, Norman Martin and Marie Page Baker. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1967. He then moved to the Panhandle, where he attended West Texas State University and graduated with a Master’s in Government and Economics.
On October 4, 1969, he married the elegant Connie Woodward in White Deer, Texas. Their love affair would continue and last the next fifty-four years. Life was not always easy, but their life together was always worth it.
Douglas retired from WT Services in October 2018 after a long career in telecommunication sales.
In his younger years, he enjoyed powerlifting and trips to the ocean. Two things in life were most important to Douglas: his family and devotion to Christ. He worked hard to provide for his family throughout his life. He loved being involved in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, first as a soccer coach for his children and then as a courier to various swimming lessons, fishing expeditions, and sporting events for his grandchildren. Douglas served the Lord faithfully as well; he worked as the administrator for Westcliff Bible Church, sponsored many men on The Walk to Emmaus, and volunteered his time with the Kairos Prison Ministry and Bridges to Life. Douglas was instrumental in starting the Kairos Torch program for the High Plains Youth Center. One of his greatest passions was” to bring the lost sheep back into the fold.”
Douglas was witty, a little dry, and perhaps a bit ornery. Those fortunate enough to know and love him will miss his sense of humor, quiet leadership, and example.
His parents, a sister Doris Cook, his best friend, B.G. Sinclair, and his daughter, Karen Baker, in 2000, preceded him in death.
Those left to cherish his life and legacy are his wife, Connie; his daughter Sheila Smith and her husband, Brian of Amarillo; his son, Aaron Baker of Amarillo; sisters, Fay Gallant and her husband Michael of Grey, Maine, Norma Messer and her husband Bob of Coxsackie, New York, and Kathy Baker of South Portland, Maine; brother-in-law, Ted Cook of South Portland, Maine; three grandchildren, Amanda Coronado and her husband Lee, Rebecca Schmitkons and Taylor Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Brody and Carson Witt.

Obituary for Lester Parish, Jr.
Lester Adelbert Parish, Jr., 80 of Athens, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at his residence.
Les enjoyed serving and leading in Men’s Ministry at Friendship Church. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, a part of the Limestone County Cancer Support Group, and active in Relay for Life.
Obituary for Lester Parish, Jr.
Mr. Parish grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan. In his family, he grew up in the middle with two older sisters and 2 younger brothers, and he loved his family very much. He loved to play sports, including playing ball, and he loved competing in bowling leagues and golfing. He was a faithful member of the church that he grew up in. His mother volunteered him to learn and run the new dishwasher back then.
Lester met Sandra Steele at the candy stand at Theodore Roosevelt High School and they went to the Senior Prom that year. On the back of his senior prom picture, Sandy wrote what a wonderful night and that some day they would marry. Les never saw the back of the photo until after they were married. They did marry in 1964 and were married for fifty-eight and a half years. Les was determined to take care of Sandy, and was always known for saying, “I need to take care of her!” They have two children and two grandchildren. Family and friends have been a constant part of Les and Sandy’s lives. Their greatest joy has been family and friends who have become extended family.
As a child, Les was diagnosed with asthma, and his parents were prompted by his doctor to go north. This became an amazing blessing to all of Les and Sandy’s family and friends by “going up north,” where they enjoyed camping, boating, laughing, and loving life right.
Les and Sandy had two girls, Lori-Ann and Leslie, who both went to college because their parents wanted them to be educated and provided for, no matter what. Lori-Ann married Robert Donatelli and Leslie married Jon Stockbridge. The first grandchild, Cody James, was born two weeks after Les was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in 1999, and is the biggest blessing and an amazing grandson to Grandpa. He loved every moment with his grandson and mentored him in multiple ways. They worked together serving at the Lion’s Club Kiddie Carnival. Cody followed Grandpa’s example, working hard with a servant’s heart, loving and laughing all the way. He was so proud of him, Les would say, “That’s my grandson!” Les was called the “Miracle Man” with Roy Keller at Friendship Church. Bobby and Lori waited thirteen years of their marriage for their “miracle child,” Laci Grace Donatelli. Les got to witness the birth of “his beautiful granddaughter.” Her name means joyful and filled with the praise for the Lord. When Cody James held her for the first time, he said “she was worth the wait!” Both grandchildren were raised here in Alabama, with Les and Sandy’s loving family all together. He saved and treasured keepsakes from both grandchildren, including crafts, cards, and gifts. He loved spoiling them and spending time with them. He would take them for vanilla ice cream at Kreme Delite and going to the Duck Pond. He treasured every moment!
Les enjoyed serving and leading in Men’s Ministry at Friendship Church. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, a part of the Limestone County Cancer Support Group, and active in Relay for Life.
We the family, all thank God for the wonderful, serving, giving man Les was. He always had a smile, a way to serve others, and as the oncologist said, “a rare heart!”

He was especially proud of his time at The Courier-Journal’s Sunday Magazine, including articles he wrote on the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, whitewater rafting in West Virginia and the Kentucky Derby Museum.
Bill’s character was marked by authentic humility; he lived to serve others and loved to learn. He was a gifted writer and editor with a vast store of knowledge, but was always gentle when sharing that knowledge with others. His years of serving as a Boy Scout leader, a Kairos Prison Ministry team member, a church lector and lector organizer, and a member of Augusta’s Alleluia Community blessed his family, friends, and others.

John was a steadfast and devoted believer in God. His faith was strong and he sought to know the Lord more each day. He grew especially fast and strong in his maturity when he became involved with Kairos Prison Ministry, where he could share his love for God and others and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. He was a man of courage and conviction, speaking honestly from the heart. He had a truly loving and generous nature as he interacted with others as well as with animals.
John was a faithful and loving husband to Evi Kosenkranius Currie; son to Patricia Currie; brother to Joyce and George; and had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was also a devoted “father” to his three cats, Kaie, Niko and Samoa, which he loved to play with and have sleep on his lap. He enjoyed being in nature, fishing, camping and gazing at campfires until late at night, taking care of his Koi-fish pond, watching movies, listening to Celtic music, working with metals and on house projects, and having long talks with people. He loved to gaze at the stars and moon, especially on the sea vessels he was stationed on.
He was thoughtful, creative, thorough and very organized, a great quality he had as a welding inspector, working around the house and studying his Bible. He served two terms in the Navy in his younger years from June 28, 1971, to June 30, 1975, and Nov. 3, 1983 to May 3, 1989. He was assigned to work on the Marvin Shields, a frigate stationed out of San Diego, and on the USS Orion, a submarine tender which furnished maintenance and logistic support for attack nuclear submarines, stationed in Sardinia, Italy. His work thereafter was as a welding inspector for various construction and maintenance projects across the U.S,A., mostly in the NE.
After retiring in 2014 due to a disability, he directed his time and energy towards caring for his home, wife, cats and towards Kairos prison ministry, which he felt was his true calling from God. (Written by Bill Daube, Kairos Team member) John was a very faithful volunteer with the Kairos Prison Ministry. He shared the love of Jesus with the inmates at the State Correctional Institution in Fayette County since early 2018. John loved the men inside the prison and they loved him. John was an inspiration to the men inside the prison and to his fellow volunteers. His dedication and perseverance in spite of his infirmities demonstrated the love of Jesus to everyone. He was our friend and he will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Our hearts are saddened by the passing of our beloved brother, John, but at the same time there is joy because Jesus surely said to John the same words that He said to the thief on the cross: “today you will be with me in paradise.”
